landscape architecture portfolio
portfolio, pg. 2
Designed for the newly built Knowlton School of Architecture building and the new home of the Landscape Architecture program. The challenge presented was to create a space for people to relax, study, gather in an area that more truly reflected our profession. Major constraints were concrete walls on 3 sides and a large concrete oculus without substantial views out and below.
This design focuses on making the space seem much larger than it actually is by using a curvilinear path the flows organically throught the space juxtaposing the hardness of the building's concrete and marble walls. As the design progresses to the south, the elevation increases until the user has the ability to view over the surrounding concrete wall. Built in bench seating and gathering areas of various sizes are located throughout the design.
This section shows the project's elevation changes and how they could be constructed. This structural design is used to overcome the "sunken feeling" caused by the concrete walls. The highest elevation makes use of the wonderful view across campus and of downtown Columbus (Ohio) along the south facing wall. The existing "garden" is located directly above the columned entrance as shown in the link.

Designed and built to replace an old school and is now located in St. Petersburg, Florida. The Elementary is known for it's outdoor activities and the site provided an expansive internal courtyard to allow for several different activity centers for all level of learners. Special consideration had to be taken with plant selection for this area to maintain visibility of the "wee folk" during transition times. (Select link & then "Virtual Tour" for more)
The Master Plan continues with the area bus compound on the northern edge of the property. Special codes had to be followed to screen this area from the surrounding residential homes. (Select link & then "Virtual Tour" for more)
Understanding educational needs is an important part of designing school grounds. This Outdoor Learning Classroom was designed to allow for science lessons, creative lessons and time outside of the normal classroom. The location of this area is adjacent to one of the school's retention ponds to allow for future water access for additional educational programs. (Select link & then "Virtual Tour" for more)

This picture was taken during one of the open house sessions of BlueprintPlus that was held for the residents of Fort Wayne, Indiana (ACP Visioning & Planning, http://www.acp-planning.com/portfolio/downtown-vision-city-of-fort-wayne-indiana/). The huge master site evaluation shown was the result of numerous hours of photography, analysis of existing structures, parking availability, etc. Everyone was encouraged to visit and among other jobs, I answered many questions that day.
This project was about creating a comfortable gathering space in the new Knowlton School of Architecture building at OSU. I created an indoor tree to juxtapose all the surrounding concrete of the builiding and to emphasize bringing the outdoors in.
Sketch of a paper machee Christmas angel that I have. This sketch was used for the church Sunday bulletin cover at the First Christian Church in Kenton, Ohio.

roof top garden design

This project was an educational activity, although it was going to be used for actual proposals purposes for the newly constructed Knowlton School of Architecture Building (Ohio State University). The roof top garden that was installed by the building architect was understated and impractical, so students were allowed to create designs that were more functional and reflective of the Landscape Architecture program itself.

LEED certified project

This project was constructed for The Pinellas County School Board, in St. Petersburg, Florida. The old school, Tyrone Elementary, was razed and this green certified project was built. Renamed New Heights Elementary, the school has a unique large and branching center courtyard that is used by the students for different learning activities. The site presented many opportunities for unique designs.

various works

These images include work that does not fit into any of the above catagories. The projects range from my personal drawing collection, educational projects to private consultant work completed while a graduate student in the Landscape Architecture Master's program at The Ohio State University. Techniques shown include Adobe PhotoShop, hand color rendering (with and without professional quality color pencils) and drawing using artistic pencils.
